History of Lycoming O-340 with Additional Safety Feature Designs

O-340

Type: Piston aero-engine

Manufacturer: Lycoming Engines

First run: 1954

The D-16A was a continued development of the D-16, introduced two years prior. With important items such as constant speed, fully feathering propellers now developed, the goal was set for the D-16A, or Riley '55 to meet the performance numbers originally quoted for its older brother.

Lycoming was asked to develop a higher horsepower engine, resulting in the 170hp O-340-A1A. Fuel tanks were increased from two to five, which removed the under seat fuel tank and improved safety. Access to the rear cargo compartment was now made through a separate door on the rear left hand fuselage - a major improvement over other Navion models. The cockpit was equipped with the latest in avionics, heavily padded leather seats and plush appointments. Externally all D-16As left TEMCO's Greenville Texas plant with a standard paint scheme - a first for any Twin Navion.

Major applications TEMCO-Riley D-16A Twin Navion:

The O-340 was designed by Lycoming specifically for the TEMCO-Riley D-16A Twin Navion project. Jack Riley, the designer of that aircraft was interested in an upgraded version of the Lycoming O-320 that would produce more power to give the Twin Navion a better single-engine service ceiling. The Lycoming O-360 was still years away in development and so a modification of the O-320 was undertaken by Lycoming. The O-320 received longer cylinder barrels and a crankshaft with a longer stroke to increase displacement and different piston connecting rods. This increased the compression to 8.5:1 and boosted power output to 170 hp (127 kW) over the O-320's 150 hp (112 kW). The engine was later used in a number of airplanes and helicopters and also in amateur-built aircraft designs.

The O-340 family of engines covers a range from 160 hp (119 kW) to 170 hp (127 kW). All have a displacement of 340.4 cubic inches (5.58 litres) and the cylinders have air-cooled heads.

The O-340 series was certified under Type Certificate E-277 and first approved on 20 July 1954. The engines are approved for both tractor and pusher applications.

History of Navion Riley Temco Twin Conversion:

THE exclusive rights for the conversion of Ryan Navions to Riley Twin configuration has been acquired by Temco Aircraft Corporation of Dallas, Texas, from Dauby Equipment Co., of Los Angeles, California. Temco has already converted a considerable number of Navions; this transaction means that Dauby will now drop out of the group. Riley Aircraft Corporation will Ausler J5G Autocar Sprayer, one of two purchased by the newly-formed French company Air-Agro-Maroc of Casablanca. (Below)

The Riley Twin (two 150 h.p. Lycomings) is the outcome of engineering and conversion rights for modifying Ryan Navions. A contract with Riley Aircraft Sales Company calls for 100 conversions at the Temco Aircraft Corporation's Grenville factory by May of this year. continue to handle sales and distribution of Temco-converted Riley Twins under a separate contract agreement. The standard conversion requires 450 new parts, which are made by Temco. In addition, the company is now incorporating two further modifications; these are, first, 150 h.p. Lycoming engines (instead of 140 h.p.) with redesigned cowlings, larger spinners and improved exhaust system and, secondly, an increase of 400 lb in maximum all-up weight (to 3,350 lb) by structural and undercarriage strengthening. The useful load is thus increased to 1,000 lb; this does not include accessories and radio equipment.

Design changes from the basic Navion structure included strengthened wing spars, that supported engine mounts and other components from Piper PA-18 Super Cub, plus new engine nacelles, a faired nose section that replaced the existing engine and cowling, and a new vertical tail and rudder based on the existing horizontal stabilizer. During testing in 1952, the aircraft was initially named the X-16 Bi-Navion. On 10 November 1952, it was granted certification by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), after which it was renamed as the D-16 Twin Navion.

In September 1954, the design was upgraded to include 170 hp Lycoming O-340 engines plus increased fuel capacity in wingtip tanks, officially named Temco D-16A but typically marketed as the Riley 55 for the 1955 model year.

Many of the D-16 models were upgraded to D-16A standards. In 2012, about 52 Temco D-16 and D-16A models remain on the US civil aircraft register, and at least three are preserved in museum collections.
